Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) affects many people who often turn to their doctors for relief. Medications and therapies work in most, but for others the symptoms are not completely eliminated. Since both the medical and alternative health communities recognize the connection between mental stress and IBS, it makes perfect sense that IBS can be effectively managed with hypnosis.
A number of gastrointestinal problems are exacerbated by emotional and mental stress. Hypnosis is extremely beneficial in entering a specific area of the mind by inducing a state of complete relaxation. Once there, the images created through the hypnotherapist work to relieve both stress and the resulting effects on IBS.
A 1984 study reported in the British publication, the Lancet, states that after seven hypnosis sessions, 15 people who had not previously responded to traditional treatments for IBS, has successfully seen a reduction in symptoms. Statistically, hypnosis is believed to be beneficial in treating IBS approximately 80 percent of the time.
Specific findings in the study of the effect of hypnosis on gastrointestinal problems indicate that hypnosis can slow the movement of matter in the intestinal tract. It can also regulate the secretion of acid in the stomach. In addition, hypnosis was found to improve nausea and vomiting and provide long-term relief of functional dyspepsia.
The mental state of a person under hypnosis can impact the physical body in many ways. The person in this state is extremely focused so that the mind is receptive to the suggestions made by the hypnotherapist. Further studies using between 4 and 7 hypnosis sessions have reported success rates of between 70 and 95 percent in terms of relief from IBS symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea and abdominal pain.

According to the Mayo Clinic as many as 20% of Americans suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. The following are symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome:
The digestion of food occurs in the intestines as the small and large intestine constrict and contract to move the food along to the rectum. Irritable Bowel Syndrome occurs when this contraction process speeds up or slows down abnormally. Researchers are not quite sure what causes IBS, many believe that the contractions are controlled by the central nervous system. Some believe that hormones play a major role as well.
If you suffer from IBS, it is important to seek medical advice from your doctor. Studies have shown that when patients learn self-hypnosis techniques, their symptoms improve. Their perceived level of pain decreases along with the other symptoms. Studies have even shown an improved quality of life allowing former IBS sufferers to do daily activities they were not able to accomplish while suffering from IBS.

And as you continue relaxing deeper, deeper, and more deeply relaxed, you realize just how calm you are inside. Calm inside. And all of the organs in your body are calm and relaxed, calm and relaxed. Your digestive system is calm and relaxed just like it is at all times, calm and relaxed. Always, calm and relaxed. And if at any time you need to relax your digestive system even more, you can simply think of the words calm and relaxed and instantly your digestive system relaxed completely, relaxes completely because you are a very calm and relaxed person. And day by day your digestive system is relaxing more and more in every situation in every situation your digestive system is relaxing more and more, day by day. And very soon indeed, you will find that you are more in control of every aspect of your life because you have taken full control of the physiological processes in your body and this allows you to feel so good at all times. And because you feel so good about taking complete control of the physiological processes in your body and this allows you to feel so good at all times. And because you feel so good about taking complete control of the physiological processes in your body, this allows you to feel more confident, more powerful, more relaxed in every situation in your life. And from now on when you eat food, it passes easily and efficiently through your body. Easily and efficiently, allowing you to be completely relaxed the entire time, that’s right. Your digestive system works perfectly. You are relaxed while eating and digesting food because you are relaxed in every situation. Whether eating, digesting, or simply being, your body is relaxed at all times. So relax now and drift a little deeper and realize that everything is going to be just fine.
